Bomb scare

POLICE closed off McNicol Street in Camperdown Wednesday afternoon following reports of a suspicious device at the Leura Hotel.

A Victoria Police spokesperson said police conducted a safety check of the premises following the report.

“Officers were at the premises on Manifold Street for an unrelated matter and located the device about 1.50pm,” the spokesperson said.

“The area and device was deemed safe at about 3pm.”

Corangamite Shire Council closed the doors of its Civic Centre for the rest of the day following the incident as a precaution.

Surrounding businesses, including the McNicol Street kindergarten, the NAB bank and the Camperdown Clinic, were also evacuated.
