Fitness group launches in Lismore

LISMORE and district farmers will have access to a new weekly fitness group commencing Friday, July 5 (today) for six weeks at the Lismore Community Health Centre gym.

Funded by the Fat Farmers Rural Health Initiative, the program aims to encourage farmers and those living in rural communities to get active, connect with others and have some fun.

South West Healthcare Camperdown and Lismore Community Health manager Lauren Patterson said social activity groups in rural areas can be an “incredible boost” to people’s health, both mentally and physically.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming our first group on Friday, July 5 and hope to see numbers build as word spreads in the community,” she said.

“Fat Farmers have been running successful sessions for 10 years, largely based in South Australia

“This is a really great partnership opportunity - they have the funding, we have the space.”

The first session is free and open to men of all ages and fitness levels, with the hope that the program will have enough interest to continue running it beyond the funding assistance.

Ms Patterson said each session would take the format of gym circuit class with new activities introduced each week to keep the attendees engaged.

“We’ve had eight locals sign up already and can’t wait to get the program underway with local personal trainer Lauren Williams,” she said.
