Matthew Hobbs has started as the acting principal following the departure of previous acting principal Tegan Aquilina last week.

Mr Hobbs said he will be acting principal until at least Easter, but is hoping for an extension.

“I’ve been teaching for about 25 years in all different places, but I’ve spent the majority of my career in a small school in Geelong,” he said.

“I’ve only just started my journey into leadership, so this is my first position as principal.

“I’ve just really loved the community.

“It’s a really friendly community – parents are friendly, and the students are friendly.

“I’ve just enjoyed being part of a small community, and I’m looking forward to continuing to build relationships with the community.”

Mr Hobbs said his favourite part of being in Lismore is getting to work with the students and getting to know them.

One of the things he is looking forward to is continuing to foster partnerships between community groups and organisations and Lismore Primary School.

“There’s a partnership that’s recently formed with the wind farm in Lismore, so I’ve spent the last week or so getting to know them,” Mr Hobbs said.

“They’ve got some ideas of how we can form new partnerships between them and students, which is exciting.”

Mr Hobbs said there were other exciting things happening in the field of education which he aims to work on.

“One of those is what’s happening in the literacy space – it’s supporting the school to start that journey in that space with everything that’s come out from the department as to what makes for effective teaching, especially in the area of literacy,” he said.

“The whole area is looking to improve, so it’s just working with staff to continue that work.

“We’re in the stage of reviewing our last four years.

“We’ve got a school review happening next year in Term One, so this term it’ll be about assessing how we went over the last four years and then next year coming up with a strategic plan for the next four years, which will be really exciting.”
