Despite the 63-point loss, Tigers coach Daniel Beard said he was impressed by the way his side fought back late in the second quarter and into the third and would take some valuable lessons from the game moving forward.

“Unfortunately they jumped us early and really got us on the backfoot which made it tough,” he said.

“We were undersized in the ruck and some of their core players are in the midfield which also made it hard but to the boys’ credit they kept at it all day.

“Like other sides we were forced to make a number of changes because of injuries but that’s the nature of the game and we never use that as an excuse.”

This week the side will face another tough match-up when they host the second-placed Lorne.

“Lorne will be coming off their first loss and unfortunately it may be a case of waking the sleeping giant,” Beard said.

“But we’ll be at home and we’re keen to again put in a good performance, so who knows. We know what it takes to make finals and we need to knock off one of those (sides) high up the ladder so this Saturday gives us another opportunity to do so.”

Final scores last Saturday were Alvie 14.12.96 defeated Simpson 5.3.33.

Best for the Tigers were Lochie Hawkins, Brenton De Jong, Brock Neal, Louis Duynhoven, Jack Hookway and Luke Kensit.

Nicholas Harding booted four goals for the side while Louis Duynhoven added one.

Simpson’s reserves are holding second place on the ladder following last weekend’s narrow two-point win over the fourth-placed Alvie, 6.12.48 to 7.4.46.

Jaryd Duynhoven, Tanner Fratantaro, Bradley Gillingham, Gus Hawkes, Cody Mason and Jamie Barry were named among the best for the home side.

Brodie Neale had a great day in front of goals, kicking four, while team-mates Brayden Hawkes and Cody Mason kicked one each.

Simpson’s under 18s currently sit third on the Colac District ladder and enjoyed a comfortable 83-point win over bottom side Alvie.

Final scores were Simpson 13.8.86 to Alvie 0.3.3.

Jayden Gass kicked four goals for the day while Riley Chamberlain kicked three.

Geordie Ferrari, Isaac Holland and Sam O’Connor contributed two each.
