A big first step: St Colman’s Primary School foundation students Leah Joyce, Henry Greig, Evie Anderson, Tilly Wetherly and Eden Mavrommatis were among the students in classrooms across the region to enjoy their first days of primary education last week.

Foundation/prep students reached a major milestone as they joined classrooms at schools across the south west for their first days of primary school.

St Colman’s Primary School principal Janet Cain said the school had welcomed five new students, who enjoyed a smooth transition.

“All five students settled in seamlessly into their new school environment thanks to the extensive preparation program offered by St Colman's,” she said.

“All pre-school children intending to commence at St Colman’s the following year are provided with five transition sessions throughout November and December.

“This program, coordinated by our Foundation teacher, Shandell Moloney, gives children multiple opportunities to become familiar with their school and classroom routines while also fostering connections with their teacher and peers.”

Noorat Primary School also welcomed five foundation students, each of whom were supported by senior students.

“Noorat students have had a fabulous first few days at school and are thriving in and out of the classroom,” F-2 teacher Kaitlin Horsnell said.

“They have spent time with their senior student buddies and developed friendships with fellow classmates.”

Hampden Specialist School welcomed five new foundation students, who welcomed Western District Newspapers in to their classroom to not only have their photo taken, but to take some photos of their own.

At Mortlake College, principal Linda Mooseek said welcoming the prep students was a highlight for the wider school community.

“There is always a buzz of excitement and joy on the first day of a new school year,” she said.

“We warmly welcome our new 2025 Prep Students and their families to Mortlake College.

“Our new Prep Students are always a highlight for our caring school community and have brought with them a delightful sprinkle of enthusiasm and energy.

“Mrs Reichman (Teacher) and all staff are eager to begin their learning program and are looking forward to watching each student thrive throughout their first year at school.”

Terang College principal Kath Tanner said the foundation students were “off to a flying start”.

“They have settled in beautifully and have been well looked after by their Year Six buddies and our wonderful staff who have visited their classes to get to know them,” she said.

“A highlight was their visit from Senora Boyd, our Spanish and Art teacher, and her golden retriever, Cooper.

“They have engaged in setting up classroom rules and routines, working through what our school values mean, learning to learn activities, and have started literacy and numeracy lessons.

“The children have had big smiles on their faces and have adapted to school life extremely well so far.”

Meanwhile, at St Thomas’ Primary School, principal Matthew Uzkuraitis said the school had welcomed 17 foundation students for the year.

“The students have had an amazing start to the year,” he said.

“Our Grade Six students have been excellent buddies to our foundation students and making sure they feel comfortable in their new environment.”
